Why is a wedding reception in the afternoon called a ‘wedding breakfast’, and why is a morning suit, worn at anytime of the day, still called ‘morning dress’?
There’s no more significance than this. In days gone by, weddings took place in the morning with the wedding meal eaten in the morning. Therefore the suit worn by the bridegroom was so named the morning suit, due simply to the time of day it was worn.
Hired formal wear is very much the style most grooms adopt today, with style and trends dictated by the fashion industry, in just the same way as bridal couture. Men have much more choice in the colours and fabrics to choose from for a cravat and waistcoat, so complementing the bride’s chosen wedding theme is not difficult. So much so, it’s conceivable that no two grooms should find themselves dressed alike, unless in keeping with tradition, you choose grey pinstripe with top hat
